The CPA Designation

Don’t undervalue the significance of the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation. These three letters are only awarded to individuals that have met certain educational requirements and passed a rigorous uniform national examination. In addition, CPA’s must abide by demanding continuing education requirements and are governed by a code of professional ethics that is among the most exacting of any profession.

Certified Public Accountants, like attorneys are generally unrestricted as to which taxpayers they can represent, what types of tax matters they can handle, and which IRS offices they can practice before. In contrast, practice before the IRS is much more limited for other individuals.

Please use special care in selecting an individual to prepare your tax return. There are many types of individuals providing tax return preparation services with varying degrees of qualifications. Please protect your financial interests by making sure the person you select is properly licensed and qualified.
